Job Description

Custodian

The successful candidate will be under the supervision of the Facilities Manager, working in cooperation with the entire parish staff and as a member of the team responsible for the safety, cleanliness, and efficient operation of the buildings and grounds.  As a minimally supervised employee with numerous duties, varying priorities and conflicting demands, this employee must be self-directed, able to make sound judgments and decisions for the overall best interest of the parish.  This position requires the employee to work in partnership with other full-time and part-time maintenance staff. 

1.         Building safety

a.         Assist inspectors (fire, insurance, mechanical, etc.) and implement recommendations

b.

Assist in providing mandatory water testing & postings, as required by the State of Wisconsin

c.

Assist in monitoring and maintaining facilities and property with safety as the highest priority.  This includes HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, water, snow removal and all other mechanical systems

2.

Building maintenance and repairs

a.

Replace light bulbs throughout building as needed.

b.

Assist vendors and contractors hired to provide proposals, maintenance, repairs and improvements.

c.

Anticipate potential maintenance/repair problem and implement preventative maintenance programs to minimize disruption & cost to the parish

3.

Building cleaning/janitorial duties

a.

Based on morning walk-thru, attend to areas in need of attention. Maintain cleanliness in building areas inside school security (School hallways, stairways, classrooms, gymnasium, school restrooms, school offices, etc.).  

b.

Maintain cleanliness and an attractive appearance of the property outside the building. Including the monitoring and maintaining of Parish shed. If necessary, help maintain and repair lawn equipment and occasional lawn care.

c.

Assist staff and volunteers as needed and requested with ladder, hanging decorations, and other manual tasks.

d.

Snow removal and salting when needed during work hours.  May need to provide snow removal on weekends.

e.

Change the message on the marquee sign when needed.

f.

Empty trash & recyclables daily

4.

Building functioning & usage

a.

Ensure a proper environment for worship, learning and service, which includes temperature, ventilation, accessibility, and furniture set-up.

b.

Communicate with staff regarding facility scheduling and use.

c.

Clean and set-up meeting rooms in the manner and timeframe requested, based on the calendar

 

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Spend 80-90% of work time on your feet doing a wide variety of moderate physical activity both indoors and outdoors.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Good problem solving and prioritization skills.
  • Maintain a neat appearance.
  • Ability to perform basic computer tasks in Word, email, calendaring and HVAC programming.
  • Possess professional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to relate professionally and courteously when dealing with people.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Complete Archdiocese requirements for “Safeguarding All of God’s Children”
  • Be open to adjusting duties as the needs of the parish change and evolve.

Compensation includes annual pay of $40,000 to $46,000 depending on maintenance background and experience, health insurance, pension, and other benefits.
